It holds a tab for each document you have open, and shows the document you have selected in one of three views. This page describes the pane, its views and the full-screen pop-up viewer; for the buttons above the document itself, see [Previewing documents](/reference/previewing-documents.md). On the Index tab the pane shares its space with the bundle and download panels, so it is hidden while either of those is open. On the Files and Review tabs, the button on the divider between the list and the pane collapses the pane and brings it back. ## Document tabs A strip of tabs runs across the top of the pane, one per open document. Each tab shows the document's file name, shortened with an ellipsis if it is long; hover over the tab to see the name in full. | What you see | What it means | | ----------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | A tab with no close button | The document you last selected in the list. There is only ever one of these, and opening another document from the list — by clicking a row, or by moving through rows with the arrow keys — replaces it. It cannot be closed; to put it away, open a different document. | | A tab with a close button (×) | A document opened alongside the one you have selected. Hovering the button shows **Close tab**. | | "Click on a file row to view it" | Nothing is open yet. Click a row in the list to fill the pane. | | "File not found in this workspace." | The document behind this tab is not in the matter you are looking at. | To open a document alongside the one you already have open, middle-click its row on the Review tab — it appears as an extra tab with its own close button. Middle-clicking a row on the Files tab opens the [full-screen pop-up viewer](#the-full-screen-pop-up-viewer) instead of adding a tab. Tabs are kept only for the session. They stay as you move between the Files, Review and Index tabs, but reloading BriefTech clears them, and so does switching to another matter. ## Views of a document Each open document has three views, chosen from the tab strip directly above it. | View | What it shows | | ------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | PDF | The document itself, with the preview toolbar above it — see [Previewing documents](/reference/previewing-documents.md). | | Text | The text BriefTech extracted from the document, one page at a time, with its own page controls above it. | | Summary | What the **Organise** agent found in this document — a **Summary** heading, a **Key Dates** heading, or both, depending on what it produced. | The page you are on carries across the PDF and Text views, so switching between them keeps your place. The Text view can have fewer pages than the PDF view; when it does, switching to it lands you on its last page rather than an empty one. The Text view has three controls of its own, above the text: | Control | What it does | | --------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Previous page | Go to the previous page. Greyed out on the first page. | | Page box, and the count beside it | The box shows the current page; the count beside it shows the total, or a question mark when BriefTech does not (yet) know the total. Type a page number and press Enter, or click away from the box, to jump to it. Press Escape to leave the box as it was. | | Next page | Go to the next page. Greyed out on the last page. While the count still shows a question mark the button stays clickable: the page number goes up, but the text on screen does not change. | A document BriefTech has extracted no text from shows the word `loading` in place of the text, with a page count of `?`. The Text view looks the same whether the text is still being extracted or none could be extracted, so if it has not changed after a while, try the PDF or Summary view. The Summary view is empty for a document the Organise agent has not analysed — see [AI agents](/reference/ai-agents.md). ## When a document does not appear Two of the things the PDF view can show instead of the document mean it is not going to appear on its own: * **Preview unavailable for this file type** — BriefTech has no version of this file it can show in the preview. The Text and Summary views may still have something for it. * **Click to preview** — the document is about 10.5 MB or larger (the size BriefTech shows in the **Size** column), so it is waiting for you to ask for it rather than loading on its own. This is not an error; see [Previewing documents](/reference/previewing-documents.md). Separately, if BriefTech cannot open a document at all, a message reading **Failed to load document** appears briefly. The tab stays open, so you can switch to the Text or Summary view. ## The full-screen pop-up viewer Middle-clicking a row on the Files tab opens the document in a window that fills the screen, instead of putting it in the pane. Inside it the document has the same PDF, Text and Summary views as the pane. The window takes the document's file name as its title. Down the left it lists the documents from the same view — click a name to switch to it, or use the button beside the title to hide the list. Down the right is the document's properties, grouped under **Identity**, **Document Details**, **Organisation**, **Processing Status** and **System Metadata**; **Expand all** opens every group at once. Close the window with the × in the top right. Up to three buttons sit in the top right, to the left of the ×. They belong to the window itself; the buttons directly above the document inside it are the preview toolbar's — see [Previewing documents](/reference/previewing-documents.md). Each is an icon on its own, so hover to see what it does. | Button | What it does | | ---------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Download Original File | Downloads the document in the format it was uploaded in. | | Download PDF | Downloads the PDF BriefTech made of the document. It is not always there. | | Move to bin | Moves the document to the bin, after asking you to confirm. It is hidden for a document that is already there. Its hover text reads **Move (1) to bin** — the number is always 1, because the window acts only on the document you are looking at. | ## Related
