# Keyboard shortcuts

BriefTech has a few keyboard shortcuts for moving through your documents quickly. Most of them stop working while you are typing in a text box, so they stay out of the way of editing. A few keys are the exception: they are built into a particular box and respond even while your cursor is in it. The page-number box in the preview toolbar takes both Enter and Escape (see [The page-number box](#the-page-number-box)), and a cell you are editing in the Document Index responds to Escape (see [Escape while editing a Document Index cell](#escape-while-editing-a-document-index-cell)).

## Move through a document list

| Key | What it does |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| Up / Down arrow | Move to the previous or next document in the list. |

* On the <img src="/files/TkXmUkwMiGfDigifVWS6" alt="Files" data-size="line"> and <img src="/files/9C48Pbtzosn7QyvNGfYt" alt="Review" data-size="line"> tabs, Up and Down need an active document — click a file row to set one. Ticking a row's checkbox does not set it, and neither does shift-clicking a row, which extends the selection instead.
* You do not need the preview pane open. Your browser remembers the active document for each matter, so after a page refresh the keys still work even though the preview pane starts empty. The Document Index shares the same memory, so a document you made active there counts too.
* Until there is an active document — or while the active one is not in the list in front of you, for example after you move into a different folder or a filter hides it — Up and Down do not move the selection. Inside a folder view on the <img src="/files/TkXmUkwMiGfDigifVWS6" alt="Files" data-size="line"> tab they also stop when the next row is a folder.
* In the Document Index, when it lists any documents, Up and Down move between whole documents. They skip every other kind of row — category headings, volume headings and sub-index entries among them.
  * If no document is active yet, the first press goes to the first document.
  * If a document is already active, the press moves one document from it, and stops at the first and last document rather than wrapping around.
  * If the active document is not one of the index's own rows — one you opened on the <img src="/files/TkXmUkwMiGfDigifVWS6" alt="Files" data-size="line"> or <img src="/files/9C48Pbtzosn7QyvNGfYt" alt="Review" data-size="line"> tab that the index does not list, or one the index's own search box or collection filter is currently hiding — Up and Down do not move the index selection. Left-click a document row in the index to get them going: Cmd/Ctrl-clicking, or clicking a heading or a sub-index row, all leave the keys stuck.

Arrow keys affect only one list at a time, so two lists never move at once.

## Undo and redo changes in the Document Index

In the <img src="/files/tWb9d9khekIZfwvjHrgh" alt="Index tab" data-size="line"> tab, these keys step backwards and forwards through the structural changes you make to the index — reordering documents, moving them between sections, and adding, renaming, indenting or moving a heading. They do not undo generating headings from your folders. See [Reorder documents and add structure](/how-to-guides/index/reorder-documents-add-structure.md) for what undo covers and how long the history lasts.

| Key | What it does |
| ------------ | ---------------------------------- |
| Ctrl/Cmd + Z | Undo the last change to the index. |
| Ctrl/Cmd + Y | Redo the change you just undid. |

## Turn the pages of a preview

These keys work alongside the buttons in the preview toolbar — see [Previewing documents](/reference/previewing-documents.md). The **PDF view** and **Text view** are two of the three views of a document open in the preview — see [The preview pane](/reference/preview-pane.md).

| Key | What it does |
| ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Left / Right arrow | Go to the previous or next page of the document open in the preview. |

Left and Right turn pages in the **PDF view**, whether you opened the document in the side-panel preview or the full-screen pop-up viewer. In the **Text view**, Left and Right work in the full-screen pop-up viewer only — in the side-panel preview, use the page buttons in the toolbar instead.

The keys below work in the **PDF view** only, and only once the PDF has keyboard focus — click into it first. Clicking into it does not give it focus while Hand mode is on, so turn Hand mode off first if the keys do not respond.

| Key | What it does |
| ---------------------- | ------------------------ |
| Page Up | Go to the previous page. |
| Page Down, or Spacebar | Go to the next page. |
| Home | Jump to the first page. |
| End | Jump to the last page. |

## Zoom a preview

These keys need the same click into the PDF:

| Key | What it does |
| ----------------------------- | ------------ |
| Plus (+), or Equals (=) | Zoom in. |
| Minus (−), or Underscore (\_) | Zoom out. |

Equals and Underscore share their physical key with Plus and Minus, so you can zoom in without holding Shift and zoom out with it held.

## Leave a preview mode

Escape works in the **PDF view**, and needs the same click into the PDF as the keys above.

| Key | What it does |
| ------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Escape | Leave Hand mode or Selection mode and go back to selecting text. |

If neither mode is on, Escape normally has nothing to switch off. On a desktop browser it then carries on to the window holding the preview — most importantly, a pop-up preview closes. A preview opens with neither mode on, so this is what a first press of Escape does.

## The page-number box

The preview toolbar has a page-number box in both the **PDF view** and the **Text view**. It is itself a text box, and two keys work while your cursor is in it. Unlike the keys in the sections above, they need no click into the document first.

| Key | What it does |
| ------ | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Enter | Jump to the page number you typed. |
| Escape | Put the box back to the page you are on, without jumping to the number you typed. |

Escape here is not the Escape in the section above: it acts on the box, not on the document, so it does not leave Hand mode or Selection mode.

On a desktop browser the box does not swallow Escape, so what else happens depends on where you opened the document:

* In the side-panel preview, and anywhere else the preview sits directly on the page, nothing else happens.
* In the full-screen pop-up viewer, or another pop-up window showing the document, the window also closes.
* The **Edit Subindex** window is the one case Escape cannot close: it stays open and gives a brief pulse.

## Escape while editing a Document Index cell

In the **Index** tab you can edit an entry's date or description in place, in a small box inside the cell. That box is a text box too, and Escape works inside it — but it does the opposite of Escape in the page-number box. It cancels your edit and puts the cell back to what it was, and it stops there: it does not travel on to any window behind it, so a pop-up viewer stays open.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.brieftech.ai/reference/keyboard-shortcuts.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
