# Document classes

The classes BriefTech's AI chooses from when it classifies a document, what each one covers, and how to filter a matter by class.

BriefTech's AI assigns a document's class. The 34 classes it is instructed to choose from are listed below. The class is read-only — you cannot set it by hand, and it is not a column in the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8f18f06a78c4d0bf6e51eac54ec7d3e5d2cdb8a2%2Ftab-review.svg?alt=media" alt="Review tab" data-size="line"> tab. It is assigned afresh whenever the document is re-analysed (see [Bulk-edit metadata across many documents](/how-to-guides/review/bulk-edit-metadata.md) for how to re-run the AI on selected documents).

To work with it, open the **Classes** group in the left-hand panel of the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8f18f06a78c4d0bf6e51eac54ec7d3e5d2cdb8a2%2Ftab-review.svg?alt=media" alt="Review tab" data-size="line"> tab: it lists the classes present in the matter, each with its document count for the whole matter, and ticking a class narrows the list to those documents.

A document with no class does not appear in the group, and is hidden whenever any class is ticked. How class ticks combine with folder and label ticks is described in [Folders, labels, and collections](/reference/folders-labels-and-collections.md).

If classifying a document fails, or the AI returns a value that is not on the list, the **Classes** group can also show an extra entry that is not one of the classes below. The documents under such an entry have not been given one of the listed classes.

## How a class is chosen

The AI is instructed to follow these rules:

* A document is classed by what it **is** — its form and legal function — not by what it discusses.
* An email is classed **Email** even when it attaches or refers to an agreement, an affidavit or another document.
* A letter demanding payment is classed **Correspondence**, not **Invoice**.
* A board resolution approving an agreement is classed **Minutes Report**, not **Agreement**.
* A document that fits none of the classes is classed **Other**.

## Which dates show a time

The class decides whether a document's date carries a time of day:

* An **Email** is dated when it was sent — a single date, never a range — and the date carries the time and time zone when the email shows them.
* Every other class is dated without a time.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.brieftech.ai/reference/document-classes.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
