# Customise the file-list columns

Show, hide, and reorder the columns in the on-screen document list on the Files and Review tabs.

The document list — the table of files you see on the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-30913153ebd9cc9194606c644922feb649ae10a5%2Ftab-files.svg?alt=media" alt="Files" data-size="line"> and <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8f18f06a78c4d0bf6e51eac54ec7d3e5d2cdb8a2%2Ftab-review.svg?alt=media" alt="Review" data-size="line"> tabs — can be tailored to show the columns you want, in the order you want.

## Customise the columns

1. **Open the column picker.** In the document-list toolbar, select <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-6824127d0f9eaaa0e43eb59468043ba819e5198b%2Ficon-columns.svg?alt=media" alt="Customise columns" data-size="line">. The column picker opens.
2. **Show or hide a column.** Tick a column to show it in the list, or untick it to hide it. When the list is long, type in the search box to find a column by name.
3. **Reorder the columns.** Drag a column by its handle to move it up or down. The top-to-bottom order in the dialog is the left-to-right order of the columns in the list.
4. **Resize a column.** Drag the border between two column headers to make a column wider or narrower.
5. **Apply your changes.** Select <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-1948f5e6ef2118c4e58fdc6bdf895c6a4fbf16a5%2Fbtn-apply.svg?alt=media" alt="Apply" data-size="line"> to update the list with your changes.

## Search within columns

Select <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-dee4ef964fbc709933b45f6f52bf9c0798d49df8%2Ficon-search.svg?alt=media" alt="Search" data-size="line"> in the document-list toolbar (labelled "Search" on a wide screen, icon-only on a narrow one) to show a filter row beneath the column headers — it stays hidden until you do. Type in the box under any searchable column to narrow the list to the rows that match. Select the button again to hide the row.

**What these settings affect, and how they're saved:**

* They change only how the **on-screen** document list looks — they do **not** change the columns in the exported Document Index.
* Your column widths and other layout choices are saved in your browser, so they are kept when you reload the page; each document list keeps its own — the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-30913153ebd9cc9194606c644922feb649ae10a5%2Ftab-files.svg?alt=media" alt="Files" data-size="line"> and <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-8f18f06a78c4d0bf6e51eac54ec7d3e5d2cdb8a2%2Ftab-review.svg?alt=media" alt="Review" data-size="line"> tabs are saved separately.
* On the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-30913153ebd9cc9194606c644922feb649ae10a5%2Ftab-files.svg?alt=media" alt="Files" data-size="line"> tab, your sort and filter are remembered too.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.brieftech.ai/how-to-guides/review/customize-file-list-columns.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
