Split a PDF

Split one PDF into several separate documents with the PDF Splitter tool.

In the Files or Review tab, select the PDF, then choose Split PDF from the Tools menu.

You need exactly one file that has a PDF version selected — that includes files BriefTech has converted to PDF for you, such as a Word document, an email, or a scanned image, not only files that arrived as PDFs. If you select more than one file, or a file with no PDF version yet, the action does not appear.

Split a PDF into separate documents

  1. Open the matter's Files tab tab (or the Review tab tab) and select the file you want to split.

  2. Open the Tools menu and choose Split PDF. You can also right-click the file's row and choose it there. The PDF Splitter opens.

  3. Mark where the PDF should be cut. Each cut point starts a new document:

    • Hover between two page thumbnails and click the scissors to add a cut point there.

    • Or open Preset and pick a pattern — split every few pages, split at the document's top-level bookmarks, or auto-detect divider pages.

    • To leave a page out of the results, hover its thumbnail and click the bin icon; click again to bring it back.

  4. Check the Output Segments panel on the right. It lists the documents that will be created and the pages each one covers.

  5. Click Done. BriefTech cuts the PDF and stages the new documents in the Upload Manager.

  6. In the Upload Manager, click Upload Now to add the new documents to the matter. If you close the Upload Manager without uploading, the split is discarded.

What you get: The new documents are named after the original with a numbered suffix — for example Bundle A_split_001.pdf, Bundle A_split_002.pdf — and are added as children of the original file, in the same folder. The original file is not changed or removed.
