# Reprocess a failed document

Re-run a document through the processing pipeline after it failed.

1. Open the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-30913153ebd9cc9194606c644922feb649ae10a5%2Ftab-files.svg?alt=media" alt="Files tab" data-size="line"> tab. Each failed document shows a red error icon in the **Status** column — hover it to read the error message. To list only failed files, switch to the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-37d644760a5ee6e01339e95d7c53eb14f0b99bb4%2Fview-exceptions.svg?alt=media" alt="Exceptions" data-size="line"> view.
2. Select the document (or several), then open the **Tools** menu in the toolbar and choose <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-d0e6b89a4a252f16acc7ad2ee31373e54f789ddd%2Fbtn-reprocess-selection.svg?alt=media" alt="Re-process Selection" data-size="line"> — or right-click the selection and choose <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-d0e6b89a4a252f16acc7ad2ee31373e54f789ddd%2Fbtn-reprocess-selection.svg?alt=media" alt="Re-process Selection" data-size="line"> from the menu. The file re-runs through the pipeline immediately — there is no confirmation dialog or options to set.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** The whole selection is checked before anything runs. If any selected file is currently mid-processing, or is in the Bin or archived, the request is rejected and **none** of the selected files are re-processed — deselect it and try again. A file that has been stuck mid-processing for more than 10 minutes is treated as stalled and can be re-processed normally.
{% endhint %}

## Retry from the Exceptions view

Open the Exceptions view and re-run the failed files.

1. Open the <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-37d644760a5ee6e01339e95d7c53eb14f0b99bb4%2Fview-exceptions.svg?alt=media" alt="Exceptions" data-size="line"> view.
2. Re-run the files. One toolbar button re-runs them, and it renames itself based on your selection: with nothing selected it reads <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-1ce40e48b76a166a0e26b149501a490f46a99394%2Fbtn-retry-all.svg?alt=media" alt="Retry All" data-size="line"> and re-runs every failed file in the current view; with rows selected it reads <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-bcd36382a525f44b0ff173ab4c549f80059f2b4a%2Fbtn-retry-selected.svg?alt=media" alt="Retry Selected" data-size="line"> and re-runs only those. The number in brackets is the count it will act on.
3. If a file failed specifically at the PDF-conversion step, <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-17c96ab38a4ab1f88023f289792386f31361d9de%2Fbtn-skip-pdf-conversion.svg?alt=media" alt="Skip PDF Conversion" data-size="line"> appears; it retries the file while skipping that step.

**Retry All** and **Retry Selected** resume from the last completed stage where they can, so work already done — detection, PDF conversion, OCR — is usually kept; a file that failed at the final optimisation or finalising steps restarts from the beginning instead. **Re-process Selection** (in the Files tab's Tools menu) always restarts from the very beginning and discards that work; use it for a completely clean run.

Password-protected files cannot be reprocessed in-app; see [Unlock a password-protected file](/how-to-guides/process/unlock-password-protected-file.md).

For the meaning of each error type (password protected, unsupported file type, empty file, file too large), see [Document processing and errors](/reference/document-processing-and-errors.md).

## What you've done

You've re-run a failed document without leaving BriefTech — either with **Re-process Selection** from the Files tab, which restarts from the beginning, or with **Retry All** / **Retry Selected** in the Exceptions view, which resume from the last completed stage where they can. The file goes back through the same processing pipeline.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.brieftech.ai/how-to-guides/process/reprocess-failed-document.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
