# Organise documents into folders

Create folders, move documents between them, and filter the matter by folder.

## Create a folder

1. In the left sidebar, select the parent location where the new folder should live — **Folder Root** for the matter root, or an existing folder to nest inside it.
2. Click <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c429ed7ed6f61aef5a4799d6124a719b61077b74%2Ficon-create-new-folder.svg?alt=media" alt="New folder" data-size="line"> **New folder** in the toolbar.
3. Enter a name and confirm.

{% hint style="info" %}
**Note:** A folder you create with <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-c429ed7ed6f61aef5a4799d6124a719b61077b74%2Ficon-create-new-folder.svg?alt=media" alt="New folder" data-size="line"> stays in the sidebar even while it is empty. Folders that appear only because you uploaded or moved documents into them are removed automatically once their last document leaves.
{% endhint %}

You can also create a sub-folder from an existing folder directly: hover over it in the left sidebar, click its menu button (the ⋮), and choose **New folder** — the sub-folder is created inside that folder.

## Move documents into a folder

1. In the file table. Select one or more documents using their checkboxes.
2. Click <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-59c42275985c7cfce0b46a11f56e05598e42f235%2Ficon-move-files.svg?alt=media" alt="Move Files" data-size="line"> in the bulk-action toolbar (its tooltip reads **Move Files (N)**).
3. Pick the target folder from the dropdown and click <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-2ac0714aaaf5e6fc0607ab352f57915f757da228%2Fbtn-move.svg?alt=media" alt="Move" data-size="line">.

**Other ways to move documents into a folder:**

* **Using drag-and-drop** — select one or more documents in the file table, then drag the selection onto a folder in the left sidebar. The documents move into that folder.
* **Using the right-click menu** — select one or more documents, right-click the selection, and choose **Move Files** — this opens the same folder picker as the toolbar button.

To move documents back to the matter root, select **Root** as the destination in the Move Files dialog (or drag the selection onto **Folder Root** in the left sidebar).

## Move a folder into another folder

To re-nest a folder, drag it onto another folder in the left sidebar. The folder — and everything inside it — moves under the target. You cannot drop a folder onto itself, its current parent, or one of its own sub-folders.

## Rename or remove a folder

1. Hover over the folder in the left sidebar and click its menu button (the ⋮ that appears next to the folder name).
2. Choose **Rename** or **Remove folder**.

Removing a folder that still contains documents moves the folder and its documents to the bin, where you can restore them. Removing an empty folder deletes it outright — there is nothing to restore.

## Upload directly into a folder

1. Select the folder in the left sidebar before you start the upload — its name highlights to confirm it is active.
2. Drag-and-drop onto the file table, or click <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-b190e06d317a1b26f7d43dfd4dbc5d172fc99fa1%2Fbtn-upload.svg?alt=media" alt="Upload" data-size="line"> in the toolbar; the **Upload Manager** opens with the destination already set to the selected folder.

To preserve a nested folder structure from your computer, drag a desktop folder (with files inside) onto the upload area — BriefTech rebuilds the same hierarchy. Alternatively, click <img src="https://2262431129-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FlnHu06wl3NH457iwjBmr%2Fuploads%2Fgit-blob-b190e06d317a1b26f7d43dfd4dbc5d172fc99fa1%2Fbtn-upload.svg?alt=media" alt="Upload" data-size="line"> → **Upload Folder** in the toolbar.

## Filter by folder

To view only the documents in one folder, click its name in the left sidebar. Click **Folder Root** at the top of the folder tree to return to the top level of the folder view — this shows the documents held directly at the matter root alongside your top-level folders, rather than every document in the matter.

See [Folders, labels, and collections](/reference/folders-labels-and-collections.md).

You now have a folder structure for the matter — documents grouped where you want them, and a one-click way in the left sidebar to view a single folder's contents.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://help.brieftech.ai/how-to-guides/organise/organise-documents-into-folders.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
