in the toolbar, then expand **Volumes Settings**.
## Change the pages per volume
In **Volumes Settings**, set **Max Pages Per Volume** to the number of pages you want per volume (default 300). The value must be greater than 30, and a value of 0 is not accepted. To effectively disable splitting, set a very large number.
## Choose how splitting is decided
In the same **Volumes Settings**, the **Volume Split Strategy** select sets the rule for where volumes break in the collection you are bundling — **Auto (smart split)** (which uses an **Auto Split Threshold** page count), **Allow split when needed**, or **Never split**. It applies to this collection's bundle — a matter with several collections can use a different strategy per collection — whereas the per-document overrides below force a single document. See [Court bundle settings](/reference/court-bundle-settings.md) for what each option does.
## Edit volume headings and labels
In **Preview** or **Edit**, each volume-heading row carries a **⋮** menu for changing the heading wording:
* **Preview** — the **⋮** menu has 
and 
. **Edit Volume** opens the **Senior Volume Header Template** dialog, which sets the wording of the heading rows themselves (default `Volume {vol}`).
* **Edit** — the same heading is an ordinary heading row. Its **⋮** menu reads **Edit volume** — which opens **Volume Header Templates**, covering both senior and junior headings — and **Delete senior volume heading**.
Heading rows and the **Vol** column label appear only once a bundle spans two or more volumes; a single-volume bundle shows no volume heading rows in the Document Index and no volume label on the cover page.
To set the bundle-wide volume *label*, click the pencil in the **Vol** column on a **document** row (not a heading row): it opens the **Volume Column Template** dialog (for example `Volume {v}`; see [Template syntax](/reference/template-syntax.md)). That label fills the **Vol** column and is also used on cover pages, page stamps and volume file names. If you enter names under **Volume Names Overrides** in Bundle settings, those names replace the label on all of those. Volume *heading rows* are the exception — they always use the heading template and never pick up the overrides.
## Split by heading instead (Senior Volumes)
To make each top-level heading start its own volume — useful when your natural volume boundaries are your sections (for example, one volume per witness) rather than a page count — turn on Senior Volumes:
1. Find the first heading in the index — any heading with no document rows above it, at any indent level.
2. Click its **⋮** menu.
3. Choose 
.
To turn it off, choose 
from the same menu, or delete the **first** volume heading in either view (see [Manage headings in the Document Index](/how-to-guides/index/manage-index-headings.md)).
Each top-level heading then starts a new volume, so the bundle splits at every top-level heading, in addition to any page-limit splitting. A top-level heading only starts a volume where it has documents beneath it, and if two top-level headings share the same title, only the first of them starts a volume. ## Override where a single document splits
On any document row, open the **⋮** menu — click the row, or right-click it — for actions that override how that document splits:
* 
— forces the document to always begin a fresh volume.
* 
— for a document longer than one page, splits it across a volume break. Enter the page to split after: pages up to and including that page stay in the current volume, and the rest move to the next volume.
* 
— opens the **File Overrides** dialog, where **Volume Split Strategy** can be set for that one document. Use **Auto** or **Allow split when needed** to let one document split when the collection is set to **Never split**. The same dialog also sets a per-document tab page — see [Court bundle settings](/reference/court-bundle-settings.md#per-document-overrides) for the full set of overrides.
and can't both apply to the same document — using one of these **⋮** actions clears the other, with no warning. Setting **Force into new volume** in the **File Overrides** dialog does *not* clear a manual split, however: if both are set, the manual split is what the bundle uses.
To clear any of these overrides — Push, a manual split, or a **Volume Split Strategy** set in the **File Overrides** dialog — use **⋮** → 
. It leaves a per-document tab page setting alone; to clear that too, open and click **Reset to defaults**.
When you split a document across a volume break, each part is listed as its own row in the Document Index. Both parts keep the **same serial number** — the split doesn't create a new one — and each part's description gains the original page range (for example `Witness statement (Pages 1-60)` in one volume and `Witness statement (Pages 61-120)` in the next), so the reader can tell which pages of the source document each part contains.
If a sub-index entry's page range spans a volume break, the entry appears in both volumes, each showing the part of its page range that falls in that volume.
## Preview the volumes
To preview the volumes:
1. Switch the index to **Preview** using the Edit/Preview toggle above the table.
2. Type a volume number into the **Vol** field beside the toggle.
**Vol** starts at **1**, which shows the whole bundle — every volume, one after another. Enter **2** or higher to see that volume on its own. The field accepts any number: one past your last volume shows an empty volume rather than an error.
Volume and split changes show in the **Preview** immediately, but a bundle you have already generated won't update on its own — click in the toolbar to reopen the panel, then click 
in the panel to produce a fresh bundle that reflects the changes.
By default, each volume's page numbers restart at 1 rather than running continuously across the whole bundle.

**Note:** The volume breaks preview is an estimate — it assumes a one-page table of contents per volume, so the final pagination can shift by roughly your index's actual TOC length (a 15-page index can shift a volume by around 14 pages).

## What you've done
You've set how a large bundle breaks into volumes — the page limit and split strategy in **Volumes Settings**, splitting by heading with Senior Volumes, and any per-document overrides from a row's **⋮** menu. Left alone, BriefTech splits the bundle automatically once the running page count passes the volume page limit (default 300 pages).
